PROTECTING DISPLACED POPULATIONS IN SOUTHEAST NIGER

July 31, 2019

Since 2013, we have been working in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to promote the protection and social integration of displaced populations in Diffa.

Boko Haram’s violent insurrection has led to the migration of thousands of people from the northeast of Nigeria to its neighboring countries. This unrest has also impacted the Diffa region, where the number of people displaced has risen to nearly 250,0001. The current humanitarian crisis, aggravated by insecurity, natural disasters, and lack of resources, is taking hold over the long term and exacerbating tensions in the communities. In this context, strengthening the links between refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities is an essential element of stabilizing the region.

Recognizing the risk of violence in these areas, the project “Kallo Karayé! We are Together!” helps spread reliable information and reduce tensions related to the arrival of refugees and returnees. The project includes supporting local radio stations in many ways – from situational training to providing equipment – and producing a weekly program in 3 languages in our studio in Diffa. We also use participatory theater to address major issues between host and displaced populations and invite audiences to think creatively of ways to de-escalate tensions.

Moreover, we are empowering people, including women and youth, to participate actively in the protection and governance of their communities by supporting key local leaders. Since 2013, we have trained community leaders in conflict transformation, leadership, and rumor management, and supporting community structures to implement activities aimed at promoting social cohesion. These activities include cultural events, sports contests, and community work. A particular emphasis is placed on young people, the lifeblood of Niger’s social fabric, and women, essential partners for social cohesion in the region.
